I loved Volume 8, Chapter 23: What Can We Know of Other People? The strong Mrs Touchet feels her own extraneousness. The thing about conversation among the English seeming impossible (!) Feeling, as an older woman dithery, not catching what's really being said. So poignant and recognizably human.

I cared about the characters Geraldine Brooks's "Horse," and she kept me involved in both the past and present plots. Like "The Fraud," it is anchored by actual events, then takes off from there. I liked that in both books you had a reasonable idea where the borders were.
