I have Covid, and in an attempt to not have my partner get it, I've been spending a lot of my time in my room. I'm mega-tired and mega-bored, but right now I'm enjoying the dappled sunlight that's flickering over me and my bed from the northwest-facing window.

In Bruges, the big Flemish dishes are things like carbonnade flammande (beef stew made with beer), vol au vent (chicken in puff pastry), sliptongen (Dover sole cooked in butter), and every one we tried was just out of this world.

Oh. And the beer, of course. Including fantastic non-alc versions.

Patrons are sitting around the curved bar, which has a curved brass pole hanging over it, from which soft lighting fixtures depend. Behind the bar is the gruff, bald Dutch bartender who I immediately got a small crush on, largely because he was clearly there to make sure I had the best possible meal but a little bit because that meant he made a few choices for me and they were good choices.

3. Coffee is...not really a Belgian concern. But they think it is. It's not that you can't get coffee there; more that, at least in Flemish Belgium, they haven't quite dialed it in.

Day 10: Beloved, by Toni Morrison
Cover that I remember having for Beloved, by Toni Morrison. A red cover with a gold frame inside it. Inside that frame, at the top and bottom, gold lettering over a cream background proclaims and title and author, broken up by black bars containing smaller-text review-quotes and the like.
