Finally figured out how easy it is to turn off the annoying "AI Assistant" when reading PDFs in Adobe Acrobat in the browser: the three dots → preferences → uncheck "Enable generate AI feature in Acrobat". AI can be useful, but unwanted assistance is not... Analyzing on my own is how I learn.

Not my favorite philosopher, but Guattari was spot on when he in 1989 wrote that about Trump as an example of the logic endorsed by the hegemonic system. Politics is now becoming “only business,” and a ruthless business man is now the US President. From The Three Ecologies.

In Rachel Carson and some of her contemporaries, I find something that I find more rare today: an alignment between a humanist view of the good life and a care for biodiversity and the environment. Humans and humanism aren't the problem; regimentation, consumerism, megatechnics, and alienation are.

Makes sense, but I wonder about the "no longer." Another answer to the Fermi paradox is that we tend to assume the logic of modernity, imperialism & globalization to be universal for life in the universe, when it's not even universal for humans on earth. It's manifest destiny in a new garb.

And here's just a bonus: a Swedish 1961 ad for the single-use beer cans from the Pripps brewery. They suggest that you should bring it on your sail boat and end with "a little extra tip; make a whole at the bottom of the empty can and will sink faster."

The intensification of human activity that began in the mid-20th century (the "Great Acceleration") warrants a look back at critical books of the time, like Arendt's 1958 prescient book on human activity that regards both dehumanization and eco-destruction as results of world alienation. #envhum

During last week's World Congress of Environmental History, I co-organized and presented in a triple panel on "The Environment Around Us: Relational Approaches as Common Ground" together with colleagues at the Konrad Lorenz Institute, the Rachel Carson Center, and other institutions. It was a hit!
