Jerry Garcia played in Keith and Donna Godchaux’s band during the Grateful Dead hiatus in ‘75. One of the pearls of this period is this VERY loose funk instrumental based on chords by Hadi Al-Saadoon and David Kessler. This tune is fucking massive.

My favorite bit of lore about this is that it was recorded in ALBERTA. The rest of the band aside from Rupa, the Tabla and Sarod player, is white as the driven snow. The back cover’s full of honkies!

You can kind of hear what I mean here, where the soundboard cuts out for a reel change, and the tape fades in an audience member’s bootleg recording as Garcia ends his solo. Big cheer!

The Legion side, surprisingly, is more straightforward than Fahey's. Tunes are stripped apart and stretched to just about their breaking point and effortlessly reconstituted in time for the final verse, but their structure remains verse/jam/coda/verse.
