Think of Medicare and Medicaid as similar starting points so that was the 60s. If we expanded Medicare age down and expanded the poverty threshold for Medicaid and then let everyone else buy in if they wanted, it might be possible to cover most Americans that way without going straight to full UHC.

The problem is that they screeched "lawfare" the last few years over legitimate investigations so they can now claim these are valid. And their supporters won't even question it.

Counterpoint: could a better Dem have been elected in WV? Biden was able to accomplish a fair bit thanks to having Manchin. I'd argue for matching the Dem to the state and pushing for more economic populism in some of the purple states to win people over.
