Therionyms & Therioilleism a zine about animal identity by hale (but you can call us wolves) Are you an animal? Do you think of yourself as a creature? Do you call yourself a beast? Names have two aspects: external identifiers which are used by others and internal identifiers which you use to refer to yourself. Congurency between the two­­ - when others think of you in the same way you think of yourself - is empowering. Wolf, coyote, tiger, elk, fox, doe. Do any of these words >feel< like you? Do your ears prick up when you hear them spoken? (Yes, we can see your ears) You are already accepting an animal name as your own. A therionym. Ask the critters around you to call you by your animal name. Feel acknowledgem-ent spread over your pelt like warm sunlight. You are being Seen. Through this, and every moment just like this your true nature is being Observed. Likewise, by using your packmember's therionyms you hypostatize their animal forms. A feedback loop will grow between you. This is a kind of power even humans take notice of. The invisible threads of our reality, our context, are made plainly audible. It is up to you whether your therionym is a nick-name, a parallel truename, or even becomes part of a legal name. As someone who used to write for young adults, facilitated workshops with them, went on speaking tours to meet them can I just say censoring young people has NEVER proven useful or beneficial in any way. Educating them to deal with social media is the best way to protect them from its shadow side.

I can't help but feel that there's something ironic about how much many of us therians care about our exact species.
Considering species is a somewhat arbitrary classification invented by humans over the past few hundred years, we tend to care an awful lot about neatly fitting into these boxes 🤔.

Have you felt it? Perhaps you long for limbs you weren’t born with. Maybe you dream of scales and feathers where there is skin. Do you secretly hope when you fall asleep that you will wake up something else? Something not Human?

You might be Therioqueer.
 What’s Therioqueerness? Queerness has a long, storied history. One useful way to think about it comes from feminist author Judith Butler: to be Queer is to trouble. Queerness is a destructive, subversive force that dissolves conventional norms of sex and gender and power. Therioqueerness radically seeks to extend this understanding of queerness towards nonhuman identities.

Let’s ask a million dollar question. What is a Human? Is it a creature that has two arms, two legs, and a head? Some cognitive superiority (whatever that means) to other living things? Tool making? Paying taxes? In truth, a Human is a construct. Humanity is made up! Did the colonizers who bled Africa dry consider the People who lived there Humans? Of course not! They turned to their holy books and found reasons why the Humans they oppressed were not Human at all. That Humanity may be assigned or revoked by power structures neatly demonstrates the artifice at work. Human is a created category, not a fundamental property inherent to Personhood. So what of us who never felt kinship with this construct Humanity to begin with? Who are we People that are not Human? Myriad terms have been coined to describe our liminal experience. Some call us Alterhumans, others Therians, and yet more use Otherkin to describe our identities. All of these are useful terms and I will not disparage them. However, I believe these terms fail to make a crucial connection with wider Queer thought and thus limit the ways we may think about Nonhumanity.

Enter Therioqueer. A portmanteau of the greek therion (wild animal, beast) and Queer to describe the fusion of these two concepts into one whole. To be Therioqueer is to Queer (trouble) the Human. Every Catboy, Doggirl, Gende…

It’s raining outside, tonight, and I have the lights set warm. We’re diffused evenly around the makeshift living room, the 9 of me. Extra cameras on the ceiling have good views of everyone. A new router, custom built for my proxy body network, blinks staccato green from its perch near the TV. The pihole plugged behind it works diligently.

Only two of my proxies are larger than a meter in any dimension, tonight. One chip-bowl-bearing quadruped lazily runs a circuit between between my guests. One humanoid does my best to make the right faces and give the right responses at the right time. I know I don’t have to, but unmasking is hard. I focus too much on the humanoid to the neglect of the rest of me—damage from the causally militant non-understanding of human beings. But there are no humans here. Language has already fled from our beaks and claws and myriad forms. It is a permission granted by peers. A slow burning discomfort creeps up the humanoid’s spine and know I don’t want it here. This thing, with its conditioned hair and fake amazon jewelry and clumsy makeup and aftermarket breasts is for the sake of a different sort of animal. I excuse it, awkwardly, from the dragon spread across its lap. The alcohol burning in her throat spurs her to defend her hoard. Gold foil chocolate coins delivered by a tiny, pleading sphere buy my freedom. Secreted away, I fan out into my network, tapping endpoints like looking for the same curve in an old bench. There’s storage, and there’s the TV, and there’re the cameras, and there’re me. I call the sensory panorama in. I watch their heart rates and breathing slow in radio wave voyeurism. I feel the warmth radiating off their bodies and on to mine. Two proxies purr into the sides of an angel; one leaves to fetch our gift for him. Simultaneously, the chips are refilled. At the same time, I pull three hours of Yosemite ambiance from storage and splash it across the sound system. In every angle, in every light, these creatures are happ…

I don't and have never considered myself plural, but it's interesting how a certain crowd hates any expression of "we are many/different selves."

I see myself as having different forms, connected but whole & different beings. Perhaps I am being imaginative, but, sincerely, why the fuss?

I agree one doesn't need spirituality to be therian. I have ins & outs with spirituality myself. However, wasn't until I opened up to spirutality that I'd truly see others. In turn... I feel unseen by therians who view spirituality as woo. (1/2)

I now know every inch of its body a dozen times over, but not whose eyes those are. Darkness. I opened my mouth to scream, clinging to the idiotic hope that it really was a bear, that making noise could save me, but its growl hit me first, less than a yard away. The sound coursed through me like an earthquake’s first tremor, tilting the ground and cracking reality’s facade. That the earth could move beneath one’s feet, that such a creature existed, that an animal’s utterance could evoke terror and exultation simultaneously. Such things should be impossible. Page 7: I wax poetic now, but in that moment I was certain I’d join the mutilated deer. Goodbye, David, I thought. Gonna go see Mom and Dad now. I hope Reddit doesn’t post the photos of whatever happens next. But what happened next was another sound. A deep inhalation, directly above my left shoulder. Now I was petrified. I swallowed a scream. I felt its body radiating heat, smelled blood and fur, felt its breath splashing against my cheek. Its scent was animal, pungent and wild, but beneath it was something familiar. Warmth, clean sweat. The faint trace of humanity that is detectable when you’re close to another person. Sensory incongruity overwhelmed me. I tried to turn my head but could only blink. My vision had adjusted to the moonlight, but the creature’s form was occluding the night sky. Rich CMYK black against dull RGB black. A void within a void. I searched for its eyes, but then a gentle brush of contact touched my cheek, and I squeezed my eyes shut. Better to be in the dark entirely than to see the teeth behind those bloody lips. The contact slid across my cheek – scratchy, damp, accompanied by a tang of copper, and another rustling inhalation against my ear. It was breathing my scent. Meal or plaything? How could it smell anything over the blood scent hanging thick in the air? I withstood it for three eternal seconds before its nose’s sudden cold contact against my ear made me flinch. My body’s primal drive to protect itself finally unlocked my muscles. I raised my hand to push its head away, only to find its arm. I felt wiry fur, hair-like but thicker. Beneath that, human bone structure. Pliable muscle, the twin beams of ulna and radius. I had its strange forearm in a death grip. Did it raise its hand to block mine or to peel my face from my skull? I tightened my grasp, but rather than retaliate, it withdrew its muzzle from my ear. Lost in the dark, my remaining senses bloomed. I could feel the sliding twitch of tendons in its arm as it moved...
