A #Halloween #FossilFriday! Here’s a 🧠 brain! Sorta… this is an endocast, where sediment packed into a skull while there was still some soft tissue replacing and molding and casting where the brain was. This particular one is Miocene from Kyrgyzstan and likely horse. Found by @ashpoust.bsky.social

My whiteboard drawing seems to have modified. I personally think it’s a great improvement. I want only really derpy sauropod reconstructions from now on!

You actually can polish a turd by the way 😂 (cut and polished dinosaur coprolite)

When you forget your regular crafting I guess you just have to make a Permian synapsid during faculty meetings?

I actually absolutely love side track questions in my intro classes (because they all relate to geology!) but this may be the first time I’ve (or anyone else) combined Three Mile Island nuclear accident and tuataras in the same lecture! 😅🤣

You know I wasn’t the only one having a rough Friday when there was a pair of pants lying on the floor in the hallway…

Switched out the display case for *spooky season* at SWOCC!

Today I learned that these are called “Scoopula” and that like Kleenex or bandaids that’s actually a brand name. So unless it was made by Thermo Fisher Scientific it’s just sparkling pooper scooper.

Also I have a personal vendetta against kyanite, as my inability to find it in thin section is what got me diagnosed with a rare form of color blindness called tritanopia. (Figure is not what I see per say, it’s pretty mild)

It’s also one of the oldest descriptions of a mineral, being first names “aematitis lithos” (literally blood stone) by Theophrastus the Greek in early 300s BCE. The name as we now know it still dates to Pliney the Elder in 79AD and is possibly the 1st “ite”!

Nothing like a wildfire rapidly expanding right next to you field trip route 😬 Sooooooo I’ll be an alternative different route only half made up on the fly tomorrow!

I think it would be easier to get people excited about our super cool XRF if it didn’t look like an early 2000s printer…

Mystery clam! One of my Oregon fossil sites is full of these clams… I know nothing about clams… trying to at least get a family(?) level ID? @dantheclamman.blog

It’s #FossilFriday!!!! This time I’m sharing a fossil toe of a Miocene-Pliocene aged Hipparion-grade horse. This one was found in Kyrgyzstan by my student @dirtdrink.bsky.social! We also have a metapodial and several teeth from this locality and same tiny horse!

A double rainbow over a volcano is good luck right?

Funny this fake artist bothered with a copywrite statement considering they just steal everything from actual artists. Also suspicious their insta is suddenly private!

Cool social media thing of the day: I posted some photos of my mom’s from the 1984 LA Olympics on a “70s and 80s equestrians” page and there was a lady who was so excited I had photos of one of the Canadian horses because she was his groom. Well I found a bunch more in the albums and am mailing them

They didn’t make it as a regular run… 😤

It was a “BreyerFest” only model, but 2000 made, which is a decent amount.
The one I realllllly want but will never get is the one they did like a Pleistocene horse with Paleolithic art! Only 650 made…

I’d suspect a new batch will be for sale from other folks buying the four pack, but not wanting that model! I love the quagga and really like two of the horses, but I’ll sell or trade this one:
