Spanish and Galician speaker (from Spain) here. We use "woke", just pronounced different. "Progre" is also used as a synonym of "liberal" (Lib=left-leaning is not very common here). Plus, "perroflauta" was used as an insult for those involved in movements similar to Occupy.

And who isn't?

That is a particular pet peeve of mine. Whenever someone uses the business - or for that matter, the household - analogy, I inmediately brace for disagreement.

Agreed! Those that do not consider it *that* dangerous remind of the Neutrals in Futurama. They never go behind Code BEIGE.

Yesss, this is specially relevant, as it always *feels* that you are enganging in smear tactics and not being "objective & descriptive" (as much as one can be)

A debate were I believe we (historians) have been underdiagnosing as a correction against the prevalence of "fascist" as an insult. I do agree Freeden's approach is more flexible & useful and less prone to be tied to just a specific set of historical markers

I do believe as well that for a majority of people it is a proxy debate - at least in the US. Yet for many historians in continental Europe it ecoes the many discussions around how to understand our postWWII authoritarian movements and how to cathegorize them - regardless of how dangerous they are

I agree! I also find Freeden's work particularly useful and apply it liberaly even to pre-modern ideologies. For fascism, Griffin's take on palingenesis is also illuminating (MAGA in a nutshell), yet more as one of the recurring traits mentioned by Eco rather than as a "fascist minimum".

Being a historian myself, I believe it stems from an overly historicist definition of this ideology - it HAS to be fairly similar to the iteration of the 30's, otherwise is not the same animal. I just don't think this is a particularly useful approach.

Personally, I find interesting the reticence of many (in my neck of the woods, at least) to label it as such when seriously *describing* the movement - that is, when going beyond insult.

Hi, Toby. Do you know if it will be streamed?
