Sakhi Shrine, Kabul. It’s one of the most important sites in the nation for the minority Shia population & a stunning piece of architecture (particularly due to the contrast with the hills). It’s had a torrid recent history, targeted by IS in a suicide bombing in 2018, killing & injuring many.

Herat in Western Afghanistan, near Iran. It felt different to other areas of the country - the food has a Persian feel, streets are wider/tidier & greener & it felt more relaxed. It has lots of well maintained historic sites too, which would draw millions of tourists in more stable nations.

Afghaniscran - I ate wonderful food while in the nation & the cuisine takes influences from all its neighbours. In the north I had a momo/manti like dish (similar to Uzbekistan & China), in Herat the food felt Perisan, there were lots of Middle Eastern style kebabs, curries over towards Kabul etc.

I’ll be continuing to share more from my recent stint in Afghanistan soon, however, I’ve just landed in Sri Lanka. Having a month among the waves surfing and exploring the country. My first visit and I’m really impressed, apart from the humidity. It’s giving me a complete kicking.

A first post on here.

The tile makers of Herat, in Afghanistan, at the city’s Central Mosque. The process hasn’t changed in generations and they’re all created & designed by hand, before being put into a kiln for firing. They’re used throughout the city, both to maintain historic sites & elsewhere.
