Writer, on the lookout for hidden trails, adventure tales & good ales. Gutter-based stargazer. Drum basher. Taekwondo try hard. Fan of books, bands, bikes, boats, boards, beaches, beers. Anti-fascist always. Antisocial when hungry. Political southpaw.⚒️
Just started ‘The Living Sea of Waking Dreams’ by one of my favourite Aussie authors, Richard Flanagan. Discombobulating from the opening words, it’s more of a slow burn than Flanagan’s best (‘Death of a River Guide’ and ‘The Sound of One Hand Clapping’ are masterpieces), but it’s drawing me in.

Last week I wrote this op ed about criticism campers on Dartmoor have received recently👇

Then, at the weekend I went and wild camped on Sheepstor with a mate. It was glorious & there were 17 other tents. Did a sweep afterwards & found just 1 sweet wrapper. 🫡

Went to Bristol this weekend to see Idles (who were brilliant), and chanced upon this highly important cultural landmark.

Never mind where the Magna Carta was signed, this is where that scene from Only Fools and Horses when Del Boy falls through the bar was filmed.

Play it nice and cool son…

Saturday in Finsbury Park, with Kneecap, Amyl & the Sniffers and Fontaines DC, was superb. Great day, lovely company, thunderously fantastic music, beautiful show of solidarity for the people of Palestine. 💚🥁☘️🎸🍉

The Third Policeman by Flann O’Brien, and it’s magnificent.

Celebrating with one of these tonight. Today we had an all-too-rare win for the people over the entitled tendencies and vested interests of the ultra rich.

Up yours Alexander Darwall - I can’t wait to go wild camping on Dartmoor again. ⛺️🌖✨✊🏽

Just seen the Oscar-winning doco No Other Land. The unflinching footage, shot pre 7 Oct 2023 by a brave Palestinian & Israeli team, shows the brutal destruction of Masafer Yatta (a West Bank Palestinian community) by the Israeli army & settlers. It’s sickening, blood-boiling & essential viewing.

Just finished my second short novel of the year, The Vegetarian by Han Kang. I can’t, in all honesty, say I enjoyed it, but it’s an extraordinary book, some sections and themes of which will long haunt a very dark corner of my brain.

Just finished Claire Keegan’s Small Things Like These and I’m reeling. It’s a small, quietly spoken book that packs a mighty punch. What a brilliant writer. I’ve a hunger for more of her wonderful words.

Oh my days, just discovered that Monkey (as in ‘ooh Monkey magic’ 🐒☁️🥷) is being shown on ITV+. It’s fecking mental, hilariously poor quality and riotously irreverent, but brilliant, and infinitely better that looking out the window or at the news today. I’ve just been transported back about 45 years

Or if you’re looking for a stocking treat for someone who enjoys a stroll along the coast, across the countryside and through the greener parts of the Big Smoke…

Or, for the person who likes lobbing themselves off things into water, scrambling around on rocks and generally getting out and about in interesting ways…

If you’ve got a friend or family member who likes walking and pubs, and who you still need to get a gift for… well, there is still time to get them this (just about - very nearly last orders at the bar!)

Cracking evening watching @fontainesdc.bsky.social in Glasgow last night - tickets were a birthday present from my daughter and gig buddy - great few days in Weegie town. 💚🇮🇪🍉💚

And to think, some people said my 3-year ice-sculpting fine-art degree was a waste of time and money - ha!

Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds were sensational on Friday - great set of new & old songs, symphonic sound, perfect mix of menace, mischief and humour from Cave, while Warren Ellis teased a sweet scream out of his violin all night long - that fella is Hendrix with a bow (and a gravedigger’s beard).

Great gig at the Exeter Phoenix last night. 1st date of Warmduscher’s tour & they were in fine form (epic🥁ing). Ace high-octane support from Jeanie & the White Boys - I’ll look out for them again. Shame Hot Wax couldn’t play Lola had a 🚴‍♀️ accident! Hope she recovers soon but keeps riding & rocking.

It was a wild, windy night on Black Hill, between Haytor & Hound Tor, but I awoke to a beautiful Dartmoor dawn. Left the place exactly as I found it, of course (actually cleared up some litter) but this is the kind of experience that will be outlawed if the landowner gets his way in court on Tuesday

Big gathering on Dartmoor today to support people’s right to legally wild camp on the commons. Bizarrely, Dartmoor is now the only place in England & Wales you can sleep under the stars without seeking permission or paying for the privilege, & a wealthy landowner is attempting to take this away.

Not a bad view to wake up to - dawn beneath Ben Lomond, looking out across Loch Lomond. For reference, this is where Flamigo Land were trying to build a massive resort - a proposal that was rejected (again) last week.
