Lan Xichen closes his eyes after A-Yao leaves. He hadn’t expected the onslaught of memories with the introduction of A-Yao’s name. The fact that this man had dimples too… It was disquieting but inevitably unavoidable. He has wandered for many years, traipsing throughout the land to help those less fortunate than he. It was Punishment, for all those years he let himself stay in seclusion. It was retribution for his inability to forget about Jin Guangyao. It’s why he’s here, now, to train up the new generations of those less fortunate and put them on the right path. Wangji says he’s still punishing himself, and Xichen couldn’t help but agree. He’s atoning for the past in the hopes that the future will be better and that future generations of cultivators will be wiser.
