🇬🇧🇩🇪 Mainly here to talk about public transport and look at videos of dogs, but without the background fascism. Train driver, proud trade unionist and YIMBY.
Will do, thanks!

I've noticed the last few days that it's not possible to add a service in the future - is this part of this update?

I'm fully in favour of nationalisation, but it's simply not true to say we're the slowest and least reliable railway in Europe, and just a little bit insulting to the the tens of thousands of ordinary people who work very hard to keep it running safely.

Looks really promising up there! Hopefully some of the S109 money can be spent improving some of the ridiculously wide T junctions in the old village - it's only a matter of time before someone is hurt or killed there.

I drive past this at work most days and it always strikes me how well it's used, even at odd times of the night and in bad weather. A true asset for the area!

They've still been operating as separate siloes really - I'd imagine it won't be until GBR really gets going that we'll start to see the big benefits of having all the former TOCs and Network Rail being on the same team. It's a huge project and it'll take a good few years!

Arrived safely in Chemnitz, formerly known as Karl-Marx-Stadt, about 27 hours after leaving London. There's a half marathon today to celebrate Chemnitz being the European Capital of Culture for 2025. Sadly I fly home due to time constraints, but the train was a great adventure that I'd do again!

Arrived in Dresden bang on time - time for a quick mooch around the city centre before the final leg of the journey.

Good morning! Made it to Berlin Hauptbahnhof bang on time. Had a relatively good sleep, much better than I was expecting

Last stop of the night at Amsterdam Centraal. Good night!

My home for the next 13 hours! I've booked a private cabin on the @europeansleeper.eu from Brussels to Dresden.
May 16, 2025 at 5:17 PM
A bit of carb-loading in Brussels before the run on Sunday

Danke!

Hi! Leider nur ein kurzer Besuch - ich laufe am Sonntag im Halbmarathon und fliege am Montag wieder nach Hause. Ich freue mich darauf, die Stadt wiederzusehen!

Arrived just after 2pm local time at Brussels Central or Brussels South, depending on your outlook. I've deliberately given myself plenty of time so I can have a wander round and get something to eat.
May 16, 2025 at 1:28 PM
A decent lunch, a good book and a few drinks with plenty of the adventure still left to go. No better way to travel!

Boarding the 1104 Eurostar from London to Brussels. I'd forgotten that I booked Eurostar Plus for this journey (only £20 extra!) - that's lunch taken care of!
May 16, 2025 at 9:44 AM
An expanded international area at St Pancras can't come soon enough!
May 16, 2025 at 8:34 AM
London King's Cross an hour later. Just enough time for a cup of tea before Eurostar security.

It was my birthday yesterday and I got 20-odd messages, all with exactly the same automated "Happy birthday, Paul! 🥳" message. No intention of replying to them this year!
May 6, 2025 at 7:12 AM
Be really careful when you're removing them, they've been known to have razor blades underneath!

Must admit I haven't read the whole thing as I was just so appalled - that begs the question, what *is* proof of birth sex if not a birth certificate?
April 18, 2025 at 4:20 PM
Unless they require every suspect to bring their birth certificate with them when they get arrested, this is inevitably going to lead to situations where masculine cis women end up being searched by male officers and vice versa.
