Meanwhile, the Williams family cultivates an award-winning tree farm at their aptly named Fourteen Acres. Return visits over the span of North Carolina’s four seasons track the life cycle of the forests and act as a metaphor for our protagonists’ progress and their family lives.

This is a documentary which tells the moving story of two Black family forest owners in North Carolina. It tracks their triumphs and struggles historically and in the present day. The Jefferies sisters struggle with their estranged father to clear the overgrown underbrush on their property.

Here I learned how the flourishing of life depends upon clean fertile soil, clean water and air, a steady stream of nutrients, and plenty of companion plants and insects. Each was important to sustaining plant growth and a bountiful harvest.

My take on it earlier in life was decidedly less theological -- I was in my father’s vegetable garden experiencing all that is awe-inspiring in “nature naturing.”

Like many teachings and holidays in different religions, it builds upon the natural cycles and ecologically sound practices of the peoples’ culture and history. The parable uses sowing seed and soil quality as a metaphor for the ideal conditions for spiritual growth.

Good seed isn’t enough though. The Parable of the Sower, a teaching from my Christian upbringing, says the seed must fall on good soil to take root, grow and thrive.
