I did the same recently in a community tank, not with purigen but with liquid co2. Wiped out everything and had to start again

The good news is the larger sized gravel give plants space to send their roots and potentially spread. May need dosing with aquatic fertilizer going forward but once animals are in they will provide a large amount of poop to act as plant food

Snails will only reproduce to the amount of food present. The ecosystem will balance it for you and ironically a rise in dying snails will probably mean a rise in algae which will mean a rise in snails. As Sir Elton John sang, it's the ciiirrrrcle of life
