We were able to see the northern lights here in NE Kansas. Drove out of town to get a good shot, but could see them in town above the Missouri River. Using a phone camera helps bring the colors out. #northernlights

Spirited crowd at the Legends in Wyandotte County, Kansas (KCK). It was moving and for a little while, gave me hope.

It's aster time! I have never seen so many monarchs, bumble bees and other pollinators in my yard. I had 6 monarchs on my New England aster at one time! Maybe they are on their migration. Anyway, shows how important late season natives are. 🌱 #nativeplants, #pollinators

Finally, I got a monarch cat on common milkweed. First time in 3 years. 🌱 #nativeplants #pollinators #pixel7pro

A buckeye butterfly feeds on my late season liatris. I can't remember what I planted, but I think it's aspera. 🌱 #nativeplants

Inter-species kerfuffle: behind the eastern tiger swallowtail is a monarch battling for the same zinnia. After a brief dust up in the air, they took turns feeding on the flower. 🌱#pollinators

A fritillary of some kind feeds on my Red Whisker Clammyweed, Polanisia dodecandra, on a hot Kansas day. This is my first time planting clammyweed. It's an annual but I have the feeling I'll be seeing it for years to come. 🌱 #nativeplants #pollinators

E. angustifolia, narrow leaf CF, is the best for my area- hotter and dryer and they're shorter so they fit in an urban landscape better. I first saw these in the Loess Hills north of Council Bluffs, IA.

Purple coneflowers are my favorite. Here are 2 of the 4 species I have: Echinacea pallida -pale PCF - and Echinacea paradoxa - yellow coneflower. This year I have successfully saved most of my PCFs from the ravenous groundhog. 😄 #nativeplants🌱

Gillenia stipulata, American ipecac, is blooming now, though the plant is known more for its striking fall foliage color. I thought it might be ruined when the groundhog chewed it down this spring, but he actually helped it be less leggy. 🌱 #nativeplants

Oh wait, maybe this one.

I lost many butterfly milkweeds in my backyard over the winter, but this one growing out of the front steps is doing great. 🤷

The bumble bees (several species) are loving the white wild indigo. They are also crawling inside my penstemons. So interesting to watch. 🌱 #nativeplants #pollinators

Echinacea paradoxa, yellow coneflower, stands out this evening in my Kansas landscape. ❤️

Baptisia alba- white wild indigo and Baptisia bracteata- cream false indigo: 2 of my favorite plants in my yard (they don't bloom concurrently). The blue wild indigo sadly didn't make it. 🌱 #nativeplants

Great to see a zebra swallowtail on a trail along the Missouri River. The larvae can only feed on native paw paw trees. But dude, you're feeding on an invasive honeysuckle bush. Don't know about other parts of the country, but here in the Midwest these are a huge problem. 🌱 #nativeplants

I know these aren't native in the U. S., but the dandelion can provide early food for pollinators including native bees. I sometimes remove them from my mote landscaped native gardens, but they go free in the yard. 🌱#nativeplants

My wild strawberry plants - Fragaria virginiana - are, well, going wild. I planted them last year to be a ground cover, but they are, reportedly, quite delicious. Feel it will be a battle between me and the birds and probably the neighborhood ground hog. 🌱 #nativeplants
