Excerpt from "MALE LESBIANS AND OTHER QUEER NOTIONS IN HAUSA" Although Butler and Zita have very different perspectives on the subject of gender mutability, they have much in common when it comes to the cultural evidence that they focus on in order to bolster their arguments, and that which they choose to ignore. For example, despite their professed interest in cultural practices that challenge gender norms, boLh Butler and Zita pay remarkably little attention to transsexualism, focusing instead on performative practices such as drag and “genderfuck,” which do not generally entail physiological or anatomical transformations of the body The reasons for this oversight undoubtedly stem from the theoretical complications that surgically mediated transsexualism raises for both historical-materialist and postmodernist theories of the body and gender identity. As the phrase “gender-reassignment surgery” implies, transsexualism perpetuates the dominant ideology that prescribes congruence between gender and anatomical sex, and is therefore antithetical to Butler’s goal of celebrating discursive resistance to that ideology. At the same time, the permanent consequences of surgical transsexualism and the extreme social stigma attached to it challenges Zita’s assertion that the only “real” gender/sex identity is that which is based on the bodies we are born with. The failure to examine the philosophical and political implications of this phenomenon suggests an unwillingness on the part of both Zita and Butler to consider evidence that contradicts their basic arguments. (1/4) "Thus, an older ´dan daudu might offer cash and other material gifts to a younger “civilian” in exchange for the latter’s sexual companionship; gay and straight Hausa men also report that similar relationships occur between older female karuwai and younger men. Such relationships confound normative expectations about sex and power to such an extent that no conventional discourse seems adequate to describe it. The masculine saurayi (boyfriend) or miji (husband) is also a haja, the feminine property of a mata (wife) who has assumed the powerful masculine role of k’wazo. The successful pursuit of a younger man by a ´dan daudu demonstrates that, contrary to the dominant belief that only “masculine” males have the prerogative to act on their sexual urges, feminine-identified individuals are also capable of accumulating the kind of socioeconomic capital that allows them to assert their own sexual desire. Of course, this logic in many ways preserves the conventional patriarchal view of sexuality as an exercise of power. Moreover, to the extent that this sort of coupling reproduces the traditional sexual roles of an insertive masculine partner and a receptive feminine one, the socioeconomically powerful ´dan daudu will still be seen in many circles to have degraded himself by affirming his “feminine” desire to be sexually passive" Excerpt continued (2/4) "A potentially greater challenge to patriarchal power arrangements is posed by gay Hausa relationships between partners who see each other as equals— Greenberg’s “egalitarian” type. As feminineidentified men, ´yan daudu often call each other k’awaye (girlfriends), referring to a special, supposedly nonsexual friendship traditionally developed between Hausa women or girls. Although sex between “girlfriends” is largely frowned upon, it nevertheless does occur; when ´yan daudu have sex with each other, they call it kifi (Iesbianism).12 Although some male “lesbians” (`yan kifi) establish relationships with one another that conform to the k’wazo-haja model, ´yan daudu and other gay Hausa men usually use “lesbianism” to refer to sex between men who are social equals. I have even heard it used half-jokingly to apply to sex between two masculine-identified “civilians” of similar age and socioeconomic status. The notion of “lesbian” sex in a male context typically connotes that neither party insists on a particular sexual role; for example, partners are said to yi canji “do an exchange,” that is, alternate between insertive and receptive roles. As scholars have documented the myriad ways in which femininity and masculinity are constructed and practiced in societies around the world, it has become increasingly unclear to what extent such basic analytical concepts as “woman” and “man” adequately represent the diversity of people’s experiences of gender in different cultures. In North America, the stability of these categories has been challenged by queer and transgender activists, who refuse to see gender identity as fixed or natural; this cultural resistance is manifested in such cultural practices as cross-dressing, butch/femme role-playing, and transsexualism, which writers such as Butler have described as harbingers of the end of the binary sex/gender system. Others, however, treat such claims of cultural resistance and subversion with skepticism: the assumption by some men of a “feminine” Excerpt continued (4/4) "status might equally reflect the greater power men have to employ dominant discourses of sex/gender in pursuit of their own interests, without implying any progressive change in the ability of women to do the same. Butler makes particular rhetorical use of drag and other forms of gender parody practiced in the Western world in order to support her claim about the possibility of radical reconfigurations of gender and sexuality. Focusing on the way gender and sexuality distinctions are produced in discourse, she identifies and advocates these parodic practices as forms of discursive resistance to dominant cultural norms that could lead to an unfettered proliferation of cultural configurations of sex and gender: “When the constructed status of gender is theorized as radically independent of sex, gender itself becomes a free-floating artifice, with the consequence that man and masculine might just as easily signify a female body as a male one, and woman and feminine a male body as easily as a female one” (1990: 6). For Butler, drag and other types of gender-bending practices exploit and expose the constructedness of “natural” gender categories, opening the way for the ultimate rejection of such categories altogether (l36ff.). The prevalence of such practices in gay and lesbian communities reflects the particular gender and sexual repression gay men and lesbians experience under the binary gender/sex regime."
