Wrapping up some Entropy Portrait proofs today and looks like I’ve got a new fan of my artwork, though I suspect he may be a little biased…

Many artists produce a self portrait and I wanted to join the club, but how? I took a studio photograph of myself and made a depth estimation gradient, feature masks (eyes, mouth), pulled quantized lighting from the original and fed it all into a modified version of my Entropy layered algorithm.

Was reviewing prototype code and found an early build for Symbiosis. I actually really like the minimal look, took this art and used it for an album cover. May play around with it a bit more, see if I can do some tone-mapping, maybe invert it for prints, do a small run just for the fun of it.

Back to curating Symbiosis videos as of late; worked out a curation process so I can generate videos to judge both the composition and motion, before I queue a long 3D stereoscopic render. I intend to produce 23 hours of video content, so getting the process to be just right is crucial!

Haven't had much time for my art lately as I've been focussed on developing a game. Been working out how I'm going to make a procedural hexagonal tile map. I won't post about it too much here, but if you want to follow my progress check out my game dev account @combomash.bsky.social

It’s been really dry lately and I forgot to run a test pattern for a few weeks, as I had not been printing anything lately. Yellow print head dried out and had to waste some ink cleaning it. Back to normal but a little expensive lesson on my part.

Had plans to release a free project on-chain (Base maybe) to get community help curating outputs, but I just don't see it as viable right now; too many quality projects sitting un-minted. I'll have to do it the old-fashioned way and just generate sets of a hundred and pick myself over the next year.

First it was a border crossing issue, so we spent $1B as a show of good faith. Then it was fentanyl, which is bullshit. Then is was potential annexation. Now it's our banking? FFS America, can you fuck off already and actually fight for your country before it's too late. My mental state right now...

Made a Dirtywave M8 headless using a Teensy and RG353VS to try and convince myself I don’t need the real thing. Even got MIDI working, but sadly there is a slight audio delay that makes combining other gear impractical. Perhaps the restriction is a good way to focus my efforts.

I'm experimenting with "out of bounds" Open V.E. prints by giving three options: Surprise (I pick), Preference (I pick, based on suggestions) & Choice (pick a generator hash).

(11x14) https://buff.ly/3BWdOru

What would you pick?

I'm experimenting with "out of bounds" Open V.E. prints by offering 11x14" Triptych options. The artwork renders a wider view across all three prints. Not quite curated, like my Signature prints, but a bit more boutique. What do you think?

Kicking off the new year with the launch of my online print shop! I'm offering both open variable editions as well as curated signature collections. Been a long road to get here, so I hope you'll check it out and let me know what you think!

My latest newsletter is a short reflection on the past year. TLDR - my focus was on building up a business strategy (website, accounting, branding, social media, etc.) around my art practice. Give it a read if you're interested at "newsletter DOT owmo DOT studio".

First set of Signature prints for Entropy are just about done. Small scale proofs to check the quality in different lighting. I am slowly curating sets of a dozen, each with a different selection criteria, to exhibit the full range of the algorithm.

Waiting patiently to open my online art shop, but Canada’s postal workers are still on strike. Hope they get a fair deal soon, wanted to be ready for the Xmas season and time is slipping!

Got this 10” 1080p screen to quickly see updates as I code. I’m also thinking to use the screen alone (no case) with an Orange Pi 5 to build small runs of standalone digital art displays. Having an algorithm constantly churning artwork on the wall / shelf is the end goal.

Finally found an engaging spot to hang my Mark Schoening wall sculpture. During the day it has a more mellow feeling with the ambient light but at night it gets a bit more menacing!

It felt like it was time to refresh my artist statement. It more or less says the same thing, but I feel a lot better about how I went about expressing it. It's up on my website and also on my SubStack newsletter in case you want to give it a read.

This 2” box frame worked perfectly! Replaced the plastic front with a 4x6” mat, glued cardboard to float the screen and carved out a little space for power on the back. Feels much more like an art display now compared with the stock casing of the Looking Glass Portrait.

Having proofs on the wall for a few weeks was valuable as I grew unhappy with how the art looked when framed with a mat. Trying a larger print size and foregoing the visible signature. It still needs a few minor tweaks but it feels better. Before and After photos.
