Ferdinand furrowed his brows, a worried look instantly clouding his face, and Hubert found himself adding, "But I want to do this." Worry still apparent, Ferdinand's eyes darted to the antidote sitting on the table - the same one Hubert was determined to ignore. “Are you certain?” He asked, as if Hubert somehow could hide anything from him right now. Nevertheless, Hubert was compelled to answer, “I am. It’s the only way for you to know how much I adore you.”

Hubert didn’t anticipate such a reaction. Granted, Ferdinand did express his aversion toward the self-absorbed prick of a lording, in no uncertain terms. Still, Hubert didn’t expect much more than an eyeroll when he suggested they have the man flayed for wasting Prime Minister’s precious time. Instead Ferdinand laughs - the wild kind that catches you by surprise and punches all the air out of you. Beside the volume, it’s nothing like the practised pleasant chortle the palace staff knows. This one stings his eyes with tears and knots his voice into an undignified snort that would shock anyone who only met the Prime Minister. It might be Hubert's favorite one to hear. “You!” Ferdinand finally manages to wheeze out, catching his breath. “You are terrible.” “And you are laughing,” Hubert points out, calm and delighted. “I am and I hate it.” Ferdinand covers his mouth with his fingers, lest another fit dares to escape. He takes a breath and levels Hubert with a look so scornful it can only be feigned. “Your wickedness knows no bounds - because of your influence, I now find amusement in your dreadful jokes.”

I don't remember writing this snippet (simply called "reincarnation au 1")
Until recently, this particular painting was referred to as “Portrait of a Young Man”. Only thanks to a collection of old letters found in some attic on the other side of the continent historians were able to confirm the young man in question was none other than Ferdinand von Aegir, a high-ranking general fighting for Adrestia during The Crest War. The only other surviving portrayal of the man is the famous “Dawn of a New Era” panorama, where he is but one of many soldiers, squeezed into the background like an afterthought. There, he looks old and weary, looking over the body that was struck by his lance. Of course, this image is completely inaccurate if the historical records are to be believed. After all, Ferdinand von Aegir was barely eighteen when the war began. Some art critics try to justify it by claiming the artist was making a statement about the horrors of war. In reality, he probably had a hard time painting anything other than middle-aged men (looking at his other works is proof enough of it, but since he was considered a genius even when he was alive, few people bring it up). And yet, the renamed “Portrait of Ferdinand von Aegir” shows a much more probable, if a little less pretentious image - a man on the cusp of adulthood, boyish features of his face still in the process of morphing into something more refined. While the portrait was most likely painted after the war, there is little to suggest his status as a veteran. There are some hints - the narrow sliver of skin visible over his collar shows white edges of scars hidden underneath. Still, Ferdinand’s eyes are bright and focused, effortlessly holding the viewer's gaze, despite being just a collection of strokes on a canvas. His lips, frozen in a portrait-appropriate neutrality, somehow manage to contain a hint of a smile. He is the most beautiful person Hubert has ever seen.

modern au where ferdinand and hubert move in together
Ferdinand and Hubert move in together. After finally hauling all of Ferdinand's stuff inside, they order some take out and sit on the couch to eat. Hubert jokingly asks if Ferdinand brought along every single thing he ever owned, given the sheer amount of stuff they had to drag in. "I bet even your spelling bee trophies are stashed in one of those," he teases, gesturing towards the boxes towering over them. Ferdinand is quick to inform him that such mementos, much like all his medals from dressage, fencing, and dancing competitions are kept in the attic of his parent's house. Hubert chuckles. "You certainly were a busy child." "For a time, yes. But even I couldn't keep to such a schedule forever. I dropped dancing lessons after two years - since every kid attended those, I wanted to focus on something more unique," he admits with a sheepish laugh. Hubert gives a small hum and they pick at their food again in comfortable silence. They are practically finished when Hubert speaks up again. "I didn't." "Huh?" "Attend dancing classes. My father thought it was a waste of time." Ferdinand looks completely taken aback. "Not even once?"  Hubert shrugs. "Never in my entire life. Well, it's not much of a loss-" Before he has a chance to finish, Ferdinand jumps to his feet. In a flurry of movement, he turns back to Hubert and extends a hand towards him. "It is never too late to start!" Hubert's eyes flicker between Ferdinand's face and the outstreched hand. "You're joking." His tone is completly flat. "I am certainly not! Come, Hubert! No time like the present!" Hubert knows the look in Ferdinand's eyes too well - trying to argue with him now will only make him more determined. He must try a different approach. "There's no space," he reasons, gesturing toward the boxes. The words barely leave his mouth, Ferdinand sets to work, is pushing the boxes and smaller furniture around until there's some room next to the couch. He looks at Hubert with a dazzling smile, eyes shining. "That should be sufficient for basic steps." Hubert stares at him some more before sighing in resignation. So be it, he will indulge Ferdinand for a moment - the sooner he realizes Hubert is a lost cause, the better. Slowly, he pushes himself off the couch and takes Ferdinand's hand.  Ferdinand leads, because of course he does. After a bit of fumbling with their arms, they assume a stance Ferdinand deems passable for a first try. Their "dancing" is just stepping around in a square to the rhythm that Ferdinand counts out loud. One, two, three, four. Hubert, much to his own surprise, doesn't hate it. After a while, once he concludes he shouldn't step on any toes, he chances a glance at Ferdinand's face. Brows furrowed, he's fully focused on his task, still softly sounding off the rhythm. His demeanor makes it look as if this "dance lesson" was the most important thing in the world. Hubert can't hold back a chuckle, and that finally breaks Ferdinand's concentration. He looks up at Hubert, the last "three" fading into a soft exhale. Doing his best to keep up the proper posture, Hubert says, "I fail to understand why you care so much about my dancing prowess." Ferdinand watches him silently for a moment, smile as gentle as fingertips on the small of Hubert's back. "Well, while I understand you might consider it a useless skill, I can think of a few examples where it could come in handy." They make no move to pull away from each other, instead gently swaying from side to side while Hubert ponders Ferdinand's words. What could be so important to make Ferdinand so adamant about teaching Hubert to dance? What sort of special occasion... He looks at Ferdinand again, who smiles brilliantly, as if he knew it wouldn't take Hubert long to figure out his meaning. Hubert smiles as well before pressing their foreheads together. "In that case, I will make sure to practice." "I will hold you to your word." They continue to sway a bit longer, Ferdinand softly humming a melody that brings to mind a certain march.

a short story about Ferdinand's hands and Hubert's special brand of concern
Hubert sits by his desk and waits. He expects Ferdinand's arrival to be loud and dramatic. "Hubert! Explain yourself!", he's likely to shout, throwing the door open with a thud. Instead Ferdinand slips into the office after a polite knock. "Hubert, there seems to be a mistake." "Is that so?" Hubert asks, slim brow rising but a fraction. "Yes, it appears my battalion is excluded from the next battle." How he tries to appear calm and assertive, arms crossed over his puffed-out chest. A valiant effort, if not for the indignation burning in his eyes. Hubert meets his gaze and holds it for a moment before speaking. "A real mistake would be sending you out with them". Before Ferdinand can interject to defend the honor of his men, Hubert continues. "I will not be putting a whole group at risk because their superior is incapacitated." "How-" Ferdinand blurts out before remembering himself. "I... I have no idea what you're talking about." Hubert keeps his steady gaze on him while Ferdinand's eyes dart somewhere else. "I can give credit where it's due - you did a remarkable job hiding it from everyone else." Hubert had to learn many skills in his life - careful observation just another one of them. When you grow up knowing the enemy can hide in any corner wearing any face, you train yourself to notice things, and to decide which of them spell trouble. Ferdinand wants to keep fighting him, it's clear on his face, but he knows when he's in a losing position - his shoulders sag as he exhales forcefully. Still, he tries again, eyes sharp with resolve. "It is not in my nature to hide anything - especially if it would be of actual consequence," he says, stressing last two words. "We'll see about that. May I?" Hubert reaches out while giving Ferdinand an expectant look. Ferdinand works his jaw for a moment, but ultimately relents, uncrossing his arms and dropping onto a seat across from Hubert. After another pause, he offers his right hand and Hubert takes it gingerly. He peels off the glove and studies Ferdinand's hand, stroking over little cuts and faded scars. There it is - the slightest tremor, muscle spasms barely discernible under his fingers. Ferdinand stays stubbornly silent as Hubert continues, motions unhurried but unwavering. "How long?" He asks quietly as he unbuttons the cuff and pulls the sleeve up, thumbs digging into the flesh over the wrist to find the muscles there knotted and stiff. Ferdinand bites his lower lip - contemplation or pain, it's hard to say. "I assure you, it is nothing to worry about..." He loses the rest of the sentence in a sharp hiss when Hubert repeats the motion, with more force this time. Ferdinand shoots him a look before casting his eyes at a wall instead. "If you must know, two weeks. I can still work perfectly fine, so if you could just..." "You must rest." Ferdinand doesn't hold back a bitter laugh. "You are one to talk." At Hubert's unamused silence, he gathers himself again. "I promised to see this war through, and I intend to keep my word." "It will only get worse if you leave this like that." Hubert's voice is quiet but there is steel in it. Ferdinand, as always, refuses to back down. "This is nothing. I have a duty I must attend to, so just let me..." "And my duty is making sure our army suffers as little casualties as possible," Hubert cuts in, a sudden edge to his voice. "I will not send you out there just for you to die." Ferdinand stares at him in stunned silence. "Surely you realise that is far too dramatic?" He tries eventually, searching his face. Only Hubert's eyrs refuse to meet his, focused on the outstretched arm between them. "Maybe it is, maybe it's not. Any accident on the battlefield can be your last. Have you had a healer look at it at least?" "They are already far too busy as they are." Ferdinand shrugs as much as Hubert's unyielding hold on his hand allows. "I am sure it will pass on its own." Hubert frowns, fingers still working the tight muscle. "Any weapon needs proper maintenance to serve its purpose." He looks up to meet Ferdinand's eyes again. "I thought you of all people would know that." Ferdinand's lips form a tight line, then finally, finally, he sighs. "I... concede your point. It is just..." He hesitates for a moment. "There is still so much to be done. I... I can't stand to be so useless." His tone is as pleading as his wounded pride will allow. While Hubert is not known for mercy, just this once he can try a compromise. "What you can do is check in with a healer. Preferably Manuela or someone else who likes you enough to not say you're fine just to get you out of their hair." Ferdinand makes a face but says nothing as Hubert continues. "If they deem you well enough for fighting, I will reconsider the battalion assignment. But if they decide you must take time to rest and heal, you will do so without another word. Do we have a deal?" Ferdinand considers it for only a moment. "Very well. I will go see someone about this." "Today," Hubert adds with emphasis, eyes boring into him. Reluctantly, he allows Ferdinand's hand to slip from his grasp as the man stands up. "Of course. The sooner I have someone confirm I am fine, the better," Ferdinand says, his confidence coming back in full force. "Then you will have to admit you were wrong." Hubert huffs a laugh. "Then see to that."
