Local group near me objected to a housing development, got it removed. Council then approved a much larger development a couple of years later. Residents now wishing they'd not objected to the first one. C'est la vie...

Solution: Offer me a free drink to put my hand luggage in the hold. That would likely incentivise enough people on a single flight to achieve the same as all the hectoring in terms of % willing to put bags in hold, making space for the people who can't live without bag in the overhead bin.

The problem with the UK is they just try to walk it in

My hunch would be UK policy twitter trends towards wealthy SE upper-middle centrists, who feel put-upon but begrudgingly accept the argument that personal tax rises are needed. They marched that group up the hill, now this tells them that long hilly walk was for nothing.

Sometimes we do! To all of my family (male or female), close male friends when expressing care and affection (someone going through hard things etc). To close female friends - sometimes, again depends on context!

Have added one.

And having just finished a re-read of Canticle last week, my goodness what a book.

I love them for their "American exceptionalism" vibe (I imagine the maintenance contracts managed by enormous defence conglomerates, at extortionate cost). I hate them for their overall passenger experience.

Sadly, NSG is no more - one of the many things to go during the austerity years. Unfortunately I think a lot of the really valuable fundamental Civil Service training went with it.

Critics of the Civil Service can fall into this trap, too. Pretty frustrating to speak to really talented people and have them say "oh no, I couldn't work for the CS as I have opinions". The art of it is holding those opinions without affecting ability to do a good job.

I've resisted making the Caerphilly jokes on here all day. Glad someone has less self control than me.

And I think they're really worried to point to the smaller, generally more useful things such a scheme might be helpful for. "Why would I trust govt to do all of this [waves at perceived bad thing], only to mean I have one log in for 15 government services [or whatever actually useful thing here]?"

I think they're trying to find the "big" things people might need it for. As in, "lots of people have bought a house, it is stressful, this might make that a little easier". The problem, as you say, is there are far worse/more frustrating bits in the housebuying process than an ID check.
October 24, 2025 at 12:14 PM
Ok. But, to give another eg, I had to prove my ID for AML checks as a charity trustee. Had to send physical, signed documents to a lawyer, countersigned physically by someone from a v small set of specified professions. So not dissimilar to the eg above and would def be a use case for digi ID.

I'm not really batting here for digital ID's, but... is your argument that we shouldn't pursue things that improve complex processes? Particularly one as *unfailingly awful* as the UK conveyancing process?
