Wraithbone undercoat dry brushed with a white (Corax White doesn't quite work, I found Vallejo's Dead or Rotten White works better), wash of 1:1 Mortarion Grime and Contrast Medium (better than Lahmian Medium in this case) and finally line highlight with White Scar.

Really triggered some thinking there about exactly when he used the phrase, definitely when I was young so in the 1980s. West Country families whether that helps at all. I'm sure I've seen in various pieces of literature over the years too, though none spring to mind immediately.

I can recall my grandfather using the term, but as 'scolding' rather than 'scalding'. And yes, to mean rather a lot of rain i.e. oppressive amounts.
