very chaotic honors business/infosys student who talks in lowercase
probably rambling about shitlib politics, finance, travel, underground metal, or lesbians
for those who inevitably will go "wtf is baddiecore??????" it's an internet joke about hot girls with no metal background listening to sleep token, bad omens, and spiritbox. and from there it took off as fast as those bands' careers did. i would nominate BMTH and poppy as baddiecore too

after some time away, swallow the sun returned with a new album: when a shadow is forced into the light (2019), referencing a trees of eternity line. sparse, but with moments of fury coming and going. lyrically, it's focused around juha's attempts to move on. it's one of my all-time favorite albums.

juha's response to aleah's passing was a sort of trilogy: trees was oddly serene: aleah's acceptance of her own death. aftewards juha immediately locked himself into a recording studio under a new project: hallatar. furious and distraught with grief, he remembers no part of the recording process.

shortly after, aleah is diagnosed with a terminal cancer. the debut album of trees of eternity includes both the demo songs and new tracks dwelling on her imminent death. and uh, holy shit.

she would not live to see the album's release.

GOTHIC METAL REC #4 & #5: Swallow the Sun 🇫🇮 - New Moon (2009) and Trees of Eternity 🇸🇪 - Hour of the Nightingale (2016)
so far i've only posted 90's stuff, but the genre still continues on with a more ethereal sound informed by juha raivio and the death of aleah starbridge.

big thread inc.

GOTHIC METAL REC #3: Katatonia - Brave Murder Day (1995)
i'm getting this out of the way quickly because this has a case for being the single most influential metal album of the past 30 years. if you listen to gothic, doom, melodeath, alt, black, whatever metal, it's all pulling from here.

some of the earliest traces of funeral doom metal can be found in the mid-section of "the crown of sympathy", funnily enough with probably some of the most relatable lines in metal history

GOTHIC METAL REC #2: My Dying Bride 🇬🇧 - Turn Loose the Swans (1993)
to me, the real ground zero of the genre. still has death-doom roots, but aaron's pleading vocals and some excellent keyboard/violins help convey a rich atmosphere: sitting alone in an old church at dusk, walls seeming to close in

im so much better at projectile-based FPS than hitscan-based FPS that in destiny 2 crucible i have like a sub-0.8 K/D normally yet am well over like 1.6 K/D in team scorch

ooo yeah that counts! was not previously on my radar but it appears my peers who i talk gothic metal with enjoy it so i'll check it out :)

also i wear a sigh scorn defeat hoodie nearly every day. goes insanely hard

GOTHIC METAL REC #1: The Gathering 🇳🇱 - Mandylion (1995)
i show this album to non-metalheads to challenge their perceptions of the genre. it's deeply passionate and curious, ethereal yet engaging. contains didgeridoo, space rock, 80's goth, xylophone, and yet anneke's vocals are the real star.

im just glad i was able to specifically turn off amber alerts after all 18 million people in socal were woken up at 11:30pm for family drama where the child was already found... in bakersfield.

silver alerts, on the other hand, cannot be turned off. and it's always listed as EXTREME

my "recent thumbs up" served as a method to better familiarize myself with newly-added stuff, but i ended up using it like "thumps up 2.0" instead (but lacking old songs i love). like there's all these songs added 2+ years ago and i would not remove a single one of them from my listening rotation!

i love looking at what lists i have been added too. appears i *really* upset one person. good. seethe.
