Honestly I think a good chunk of it is to avoid any appearance of impropriety

and honestly the ecosystem is itself the problem. it works for a while when you have a great roster of talent that makes the (multiplied) price of admission worth paying, but the moment that talent wanes you're stuck with something that requires more investment for disproportionately less payoff
