There are downsides too. No sex and demand of total obedience to start with, which, to be sure, were more or a problem for some than for others. And yes, some people joined voluntarily,  but others were effectively coerced (not to say that this was the case for Mendel).

Very likely it was quite common for autistic people to be sent to monasteries.
