The Secret Agent deserves rewatch. A subtle political thriller with splashes of oddity and surprising humor. Wagner Moura is my best actor so far. Donna Sebastiana (Tânia Maria) is the undersung hero of the year. Amazing short shorts. Dark but funny

A ★★★★½ review of The Secret Agent (2025)
The Secret Agent was a very strong yet subtle political thriller. A man returning to Recife to reunite with his young son finds that a history displeasing fascist governments will follow ceaselessly. ...

• Hamnet gave a good cry but could’ve been more witchy
• Bolt is a very good boy, and the Jenny Lewis song stays
• Batman Returns is Christmas’s horniest movie. Michelle Pfeiffer 🤤
• Zootopia 2 bites into politics with very dumb, fun puns.

Auntie Mame in Lumberyard (West Seattle) has the vibe I want in queer community. A call and response camp class. It begs for drag parody.

My screening of Rental Family had more laughter than any other movie this year. The movie avoided the treacly air of the trailer and was a tender exploration of healing. Many layers in a very pleasant if slightly somber movie. Brendan Fraser’s comeback continues; Akira Emoto 🔥

A ★★★½ review of Rental Family (2025)
I was expecting treacly and received tender and funny.  Rental Family explores a repressive society in a very new way. Brendan Fraser portrays so much between dialogue: sadness, loneliness, confused e...

Watched Fred Claus last night. When Kevin Spacey showed up, the six-year-old watching with us yelled, “Who the hell is that?!” Apparently his creep factor is inherent.

Madonna and Jonathan Pryce in Evita are jarring. The framing of the scenes is making my husband and I give script notes live. Thank goodness for Antonio Banderas bringing a touch of charm to this rather cringe-worthy movie.

Rewatched The Shining for the first time in ages. Pretty spectacular movie. No real fat for a movie largely based around typing and walking hallways. Room 237 will haunt all nightmares forever. Jack Nicholson and Shelley Duvall are unhinged greatness. Likely horror’s best cinematography

Watching Spotlight for its tenth anniversary. The methodical untying of Boston’s clerical abuse scandal is done with an all-star cast with tight editing and sharp writing. Liev Schriber and Michael Keaton are exceptional. The last scene always give me chills.

Tried to go see Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein today, and all three showings are sold out before the theater opened. Got tickets to matinee tomorrow. How much box office cred has Netflix abandoned for their stubborn resistance to the theatrical model?
