More Henry/Julia? Shocking, I know! I may be too deep in writing Seaside rn, but I half expected them to explore Henry being nervous about the baby after his heartbreaking “I’m broken” line 😭 And I don’t know if they’ll actually include the 1918 election, but I hope they do! #wednesday100
The General Election after the enactment of the Representation of the People Act 1918 was held 8 weeks after Claire Elizabeth Beauchamp made her grand entrance into the world. “This is history in the making, my little darling,” Julia said as she bundled tiny Claire into her pram. Julia couldn’t yet vote — she wasn’t thirty, the mature age deemed for women to know their own minds (in comparison to a man’s twenty-one years) — but she could still stroll down to the polling booths to see the women casting their first vote. “And you, sweet girl, have a bright future, indeed.” Some small part of Henry had dreaded Julia’s news. As much as he’d hoped for the very thing — their own family, the love between him and Julia ever growing — he’d also heard Julia’s sobs in the night, after his nightmare. He was certain his own child fearing him would shatter Henry beyond repair. But then Claire arrived, cracking their hearts open with new love, and as she grew… “She wants you, darling.” …It was in his arms that Claire found solace, laying her sweet, trusting head on his shoulder after a bad dream. “Don’t be afraid, sweetheart. Dada’s got you.” Her mother was — endearingly — the forgetful sort. Julia lost count of the amount of times she’d hear her mother’s opening refrain of “Saint Anthony, help me…” before Julia would fetch whatever she’d misplaced — a shawl, the day’s post, her spectacles. “You never miss a thing,” her mother would always marvel, cupping Julia’s cheek. “I think that’s why the Lord gave you to me.” She never prayed to Saint Anthony herself until it was her mother’s pendant around Julia’s neck, but the things she’d lost — parents, a home, belonging to another soul in this world — weren’t things that could be restored.

I’m invested in the Julia/Brian and Julia/Ellen parts, but IMO nothing compares to how profound and compelling the Julia/Henry (and now Claire, their light😭) storyline is. It’s just so much *deeper* and more poetic (and I’d be sat for an entire series about their lives in the 20th century).
