We did a guided tour and had the BEST tour guide, i guess the real Stede bonnet escaped prison for a couple days before his hanging by dressing and posing as a woman to sneak out of town unnoticed and our tour guides wife made this meme for him.

Colonel William Rhett, born in London in 1666, arrived at Charles Towne in 1694. In 1712 he built and lived at 54 Hasell Street, thought to be Charleston's oldest dwelling. A capable military man and sea Captain, he was commissioned a Vice Admiral by the governor of Carolina to command a naval defense that repelled the Franco-Spanish invasion in 1706 and captured pirate Stede Bonnet in 1718. Rhett rose in the militia to Lt. General in 1719. Among numerous public positions in Charles Towne, he was Comutissioner of Fortifications and of Indian Trade, built a state house, governor's house, Free School, seawall, and became Speaker of Commons Home of Assembly. Known for his charity, he served as warden and treasurer of St. Philip's Church, participated in its 1723 reconstruction, and donated the English communion silver used in services there.

Blackbeard The most notorious of all the pirates during the "Golden Age of Piracy," a period of unprecedented pirate activity from 1690 to 1730, was Blackbeard. Born Edward Teach (or Thatch) in Bristol, England, Blackbeard sailed as a teenager to the Caribbean to work as a deckhand on a privateer during Queen Anne's War (1701-1714). After the war, Blackbeard took to piracy, joining pirate captain Benjamin Hornigold's crew that operated out of New Providence. In November 1717, Blackbeard and Hornigold captured a French slave ship, the Concorde. of Nantes. Blackbeard took com- mand of the vessel, renamed her Queen Anne's Revenge, and gradually increased her armaments to over forty guns. Blackbeard was a tall, broad-shouldered man with thick black hair and, as his name suggests, a long, bushy black beard that was tied "in ribbons. He would go into battle with slow-burning fuses under his hat, armed to the teeth with daggers, a cutlass in a belt around his waist, and several pistols in a bandolier strung over his shoulder. Blackbeard cleverly used his demonic image to strike terror into the hearts of his unfortunate victims. In April 1718, Blackbeard joined forces with. the "Gentleman Pirate," Major Stede Bonnet. The next month, Blackbeard, Bonnet and their combined fleet of four vessels and over three hundred pirates, arrived off the bar of Charleston. For a week, they blockaded the port, pillaging several ships coming and in out of the har-bor. Samuel Wragg a member of the Governor's Council, and his four year-old son, were taken hostage by Blackbeard, who demanded a chest of medicine as ransom from Governor Johnson. The Governor complied, and Blackbeard released the hostages. Immediately after, Blackbeard left Charleston with 1,500 pounds worth of stolen gold and silver coins, as well as the much-needed medical supplies. From Charleston, Blackbeard and his fleet sailed north for his base at Ocracoke, North Caro-lina. Major Stede Bonnet Stede Bonnet was a middle-aged Englishman and retired Major in the British Army who owned a plantation on the island of Barbados. Born of a good family and well-educated, Bonnet was nicknamed the "Gentleman Pirate." He purchased a sloop, the Revenge, and armed her with ten guns. After assembling a crew of seventy men, Bonnet set off to the Caribbean in pursuit of plunder, apparently to flee his nagging wife. In March of 1718, Bonnet met up with Blackbeard in the Bay of Hondu-ras. The two pirates agreed to join forces. Soon after, Blackbeard realized that Bonnet was not a seafaring man. Consequently, he persuaded Bonnet to relinquish command of the Revenge, and assume a position of leisure aboard his flagship, the Queen Anne's Revenge. After grounding part of his fleet at Beaufort Inlet, Blackbeard returned the Revenge to Bonnet, who left the ship in the harbor and proceeded to Bath, North Carolina to receive a pardon from Governor Eden. When Bonnet later returned to the Revenge, he discovered that Blackbeard had stripped his vessel of all its plunder, and marooned twenty-five of his crew on a sand bar. Bonnet rescued the marooned pirates. By June of 1718, Bonnet had resumed his career as a pirate, taking thirteen prizes in two months. In August 1718, Bonnet anchored his sloop, which he had renamed the Royal James, in the Cape Fear River to carry out much needed repairs. Word of the pirate's whereabouts got back to the authorities in Charleston. South Carolina Governor, Robert Johnson, commissioned Colonel William Rhett to lead an expedition to capture Major Stede Bonnet. Two sloops, the Henry and the Sea Nymph, were each fitted with eight guns and a com- bined crew of 130 men. On September 26th, 1718, Rhett sighted the Royal James at anchor Rhett battled Stede Bonnet for five hours before Bonnet's men ran up the white flag Rhett returned to Charleston, and Bonnet's crew was imprisoned.
