As other folks said, thin coats.
The warping happens when the surface parts get too 'wet' and, because it's kinda a laminate, the different drying of materials means it'll pull itself apart.
Using a spray varnish/lacquer that only sits lightly sits on and not soaks in should work in a few layers.
