I didn't realize Texarkana was a real place until very recently. It sounded like a New New York or San Fransokyo city.

The outsider/independent shtick is really only something you can do once, I think. It's a harder sell the second time around.

Part of the funny is that Aang comes off a bit self-satisfied/smug when delivering that line, and then all the other scenes clearly show some cognitive dissonance is at play there.

There's a funny cut of it on Youtube, that overlays Aang saying "I've certainly never taken a life" with all the people who were probably at least badly maimed if not killed as a result of Aang's actions

And of course people who *have to* take out car loans probably aren't buying $110k trucks

I imagine it must be! Thank you for the very informative thread.

Huh, is the hardcover/paperback split a more recent thing? Last I heard (early 2010s) most authors described a three payment system.

I don't think I've ever, including for heavily publicized retracted papers, seen such an in depth PubPeer breakdown.

Defenders suggest he would be better on policy, but especially for a guy who has basically no public service record, there's nothing backing that up except how much you personally trust him. And I think his credibility is kinda shot.

All of his public statements regarding the tattoo were pretty terrible. And someone else pointed this out, but even when he expresses regret for getting the tattoo, he never seems to think it's something people might consider being bad on it's own merits.

What bathroom are trans people supposed to use then? (I suppose the answer might be "no bathrooms".)

This might be because there's a lot bigger ecosystem for science journalism in general, and many science writers have a background in the field they're writing about.

Gutfield (somehow) still appears on television

And that it wasn't the other way around

I find it interesting how well she compares to Platner. Both unexperienced candidates, campaigning as an outsider, etc. But she's been walking the walk while Platner (even aside from the Nazi tattoo, which to be clear is disqualifying on its own) has not.

How do you even respond to that

Might be one of those spam ads for fake gamds that are common on free apps

Just getting through prose in older text is a slog sometimes so thank you for the link!

The different interpretations of a text reminds of me of the first time I saw a musical performed with different actors. It was really interesting how non-textual details completely changed the overall feel of the story.

Thank you for the thoughtful repsonse! The hardest part was knowing how to get started. Your advice makes a lot of sense and feels accessible in a way a lot of other stuff didn't.

Do you have any tips/resources for getting better at critical reading or writing in general? Most of my higher education kind of glossed over this part (trusting that the students already knew all this) and I always worry that I'm one of the kids described in these types of pieces.

Even per-district that's basically nothing.

The mozzarella stick takes the place of the hotdog!

The first time I tried it was like rubbery sugar so being alright was an upgrade.

Later I saw someone posit that Turkish Delight was a lavish dessert for children during the Blitz which is the only way to make sense of that scene

A friend recently brought back some Turkish Delight after visiting Turkey and tbf, it tasted a lot better than what they sell elsewhere
