in answer to your question: It's been more than a century since anyone in academic psych took Freud seriously. I have a BSc, MA, MPhil & PhD in psych; total Freud was one lecture where the prof said people at parties will expect you to know about Freud, so here are the basics.

Hold on! Hold on! Yogurt? Are you trying to say that Glenn Powell is ... bland?
January 28, 2026 at 2:50 PM
in case you were wondering, Chokachi is blond and pretty bland.

Are you going to do Atlantic Rim next?
(Don't. It's worse than you imagine. But it does have a sequel. plus personal fave Graham Greene and hotguy David Chokachi.)

Kristen is a gem -- fun podcast. I'd forgotten how much I loved RM when it first came out. But, comrades, how can you talk about the legacy of RM and not even mention American Gladiators?

total sidenote - I worked with a bunch of Mohawk (Kanien'keháka) guys who worked high steel in their 20s - they in fact have no fear of heights, which they attribute to being swaddled to a frame as infants, carried on mom's back, and hung from tree branches.

Yeah, no. I tried, but the animation got to me (esp those eyes), so I never finished it. But, I dislike anime and animation/cartoons in general (although, perhaps oddly, my fave tv show of all time is a cartoon.)

Great ep. You encapsulated everything I think about anime in general. I saw Akira when it first came out and was blown away (10/10) -- but have never seen another anime that I found bearable or watchable.

congrats on the hundredth! [pleased to hear that Josh also hates Forrest Gump.]

Hey, comrades. Thanks for the shout-outs. Still around, still listening. Still on the island of Montreal. And we do in fact say 'tabernac' (and my fave 'calice en hostie' -- chalice on host, no it doesn't make any sense, and you have to pronounce an extra 's' after the t, or it doesn't work.)

yup! A movie that has every Canadian actor who makes you say - oh yeah, that's the guy who was in that CBC series.

I saw it in the theater. It was huge here -- it's a Quebec film, and was heavily advertised as starring the then-mega-huge Quebecois film and TV star, Roy Dupuis, directed by a then up-and-coming Quebecois film director, Christian Duguay. I think it was his first film in English.

totally random BTW callback -- the music Eric said he liked was a song by Cheb Khaled (Algerian Rai musician) -- who was the singer I told you - back in the day - that I wanted to do the soundtrack for a movie of When Gravity Fails.

... and after D saves his life, that soulmate stealer pays him back ... by not lifting a finger to help D work off the damage to the motorboat. Pretty clear which one is the decent human being. (just sayin'.)

also the Methodist church is an off-shoot of the Church of England (believers who follow the Method.) So early Methodists were Episcopalian. Here it just means that the AME church has bishops above ministers (episcopal = bishop, versus congregational, versus presbyterian [=elders].)
February 5, 2025 at 3:42 PM
Dudes. The African Methodist Episcopal Church is one of the oldest African-American denominations in the US. (it's Methodist btw.) The AME church was central to civil rights movement. It was an AME church in Charleston SC where the white supremacist shot up the congregation in 2015.

Just to add to the distopia: Today Amazon announced it was closing all of its facilities in Montreal and throughout Quebec, because the workers have unionized (we have really pro-union laws here). As if I need another reason to hate Bezos.

Eric: "Guys like that should wear less clothes."
Welcome to my team, E!

(flashback: Damn those baggy clothes on Dawson's Creek!)

You are not far off. When Soviet Intelligence told the Americans and Brits about the Nazi death camps (which were mainly in the east, close to the eastern front), they dismissed it as Fake News from the commies.

No, there's really not. There is one other study out of Georgia. Out of the hundreds of studies on homophobia, there are these two that looked at exclusively hetero men and concluded that a minority of homophobic straight men had some same-sex attraction.
December 4, 2024 at 4:28 PM
When a headline ends in a question mark, the answer is always 'no'. The study looked at exclusively hetero men who were homophobic, and argued that some (about 25%) showed some very indirect signs of same-sex attraction. So none was gay - maybe a bit bi. BUT 75% showed no such signs.
