I don't know if I'll ever write anything that gets even close to being as good as Mignola's work, but re-reading the Hellboy universe (as I'm doing now) gives me motivation to keep trying.

I first came across Mignola's work in the early 2000s, when I was still a teenager. Since then, I've been enthralled by his writing, which has inspired me to some level in all my creative endeavors.

Hellboy, and perhaps even more B.P.R.D., manage to offer the right balance of mystery and revelations, slowly moving the pieces on the board while still making its characters the center of the narrative.

I think that is something that superhero media, in particular, gets wrong with Easter eggs and cameos that point towards the future, making them so overwhelmingly important that they drain the vitality of a well-told story.

Still, these scattered clues never steal the spotlight, offering only glimpses of hidden truths that underline the cosmic stakes of the immediate threat without getting in the way of the narrative flow.

From the very first issue of Hellboy, Mignola is capable of instilling a sense of awe and dread that never leaves you. It's obvious that this world is bigger than a single story, with prophecies and lost memories teasing the horrors and wonders yet to come.

Still, each new reading of the Hellboy universe — and there have been quite a few — makes it clearer to me that no one does worldbuilding as well as @mikemignola.bsky.social.
