Short summary: On the night of his birthday celebration, Lan Wangji finds himself ensnared in a game with a wily, elusive man in a fox mask.

A burst of sound explodes nearby, sharp cracks that follow one another like splintering wood, punctuated by low susurrations. The mortals cheer in excitement, and their children release peals of delighted exclamations. A baby wails in the distance, startled awake by the chorus of firecrackers that pop further down the road.

With a huff, Lan Wangji lifts his head and watches the smoke rise toward the sky, mingling with the clouds of laughter. Together, they twist and coil until intertwined, until Lan Wangji can’t tell one from the other, until they join the clouds that scud past a brilliant moon, replete and luminous.

When he lowers his gaze, he skims the crowd, sweeping through their joy and enthusiasm, contagious as a faint quirk forms at the corner of his mouth.

Only to stop on a silhouette obscured by the smoke.

It’s a slim figure with proud shoulders that taper into a thin waist, tall and lanky, wily as he stands in the middle...
