I have presented this to GW transport committee in Feb/24 and suggested some easy and cost effective work arounds while engineering solutions are being developed
Slide: Metlink and GW have been aware of poor ventilation on public transport for a long time - Metlink commissioned study showing buses regularly exceeded 800ppm indicating inadequate ventilation, October 2022 - “Poor ventilation in public transport settings in Aotearoa NZ: New data for buses and trains”, July 2023, found that in buses and trains with more than 50% of seats occupied, ventilation was typically poor, with CO2 levels above 800 ppm 94% and 77% of the time, respectively. - “On-board bus air quality - Impact of changing ventilation on a double-decker bus” NIWA study from July 2023 requested by Metlink - “the results suggest that existing ventilation may be insufficient at times of high passenger volumes”, MoH advice requested by Metlink in May 2023 - In a published OIA response Metlink stated that it "believes there is significant further testing that needs to be undertaken and is advocating that Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency and the Ministry of Health conduct more robust testing to enable national air quality standards for public transport buses to be determined.“ - “investigation into engineering solutions for improving air quality in public buses started in December 2022” - OIA response - Driver shortages due to high levels of sickness regularly being quoted by Metlink as reason for the high levels of cancelled or delayed services - Educate drivers to keep windows open, and open all doors at every stop, especially now during favourable weather - Remind drivers to not use recirculation but always let enough fresh air in - Put up information sheets for drivers and passengers to remind them of the importance of ventilation - Install publicly accessible CO2 monitors to provide immediate feedback to the driver, and to make passengers aware of air quality, as well as to identify harder to ventilate routes/vehicles with regular higher levels - Reward drivers who consistently have well ventilated buses - Perform spot checks, especially during peak times

Yet, passengers are only left with the least effective 'last line of defence' (masks)

How to make an Aura mask MRI safe:
- carefully cut open top layer above aluminium strip and pry off
- insert 3d printed plastic replacement
- close pull and sew close
- remove staples and existing straps
- sew cloth bungee straps on instead

New batch of classroom co2 monitors just landed

A number of small square pcbs arranged in a 8x3 pattern on a blue cutting mat. Each board has a esp32-s3 module, scd4x co2 sensors in a small metal case, 4 neopixel leds, a usb c connector and a bunch of smaller components. A larger display footprint is not populated. The second board from the left in the middle row is rotated 90 degrees clockwise while all others are oriented the same way. Slightly closer shot of the pcbs now with a small oled display soldered on each one. One co2 monitor in a 3d printed white case with a transparent acrylic front panel. The 4 leds (one in each corner) are lit up orange and the display shows 737ppm.
