The reason they're this wide is that they function like a talent tree in game and you, the player, reveal more and more of the illustration as you progress!
If you look at the last image in the series you can see I left in the guide for the cut off points for the different stages of reveals.

I played the living crap out of that game, one of my proudest childhood achievements is completing all maps in Quake3 vs bots on the highest difficulty. Those later maps w rail/lightning guns were no joke!

I hope the guys from Idle Thumbs/Firewatch who got picked up by Valve some years ago and were involved in Halflife Alyx could run with it. :) I think they'd do a good job with it.
