But I disagree that it ends up backfiring. What ends up backfiring to me is the director purposely antagonizing the beast which is what forfeits the agreement. I think with further training and respect, OJ and the beast could have come to an agreement much like the horses.

Yes 100%. Our heroes are the ones with the most respect for animal nature in the end.

I agree that’s why there’s so many parallels to breaking of a horse and how the main character doesn’t want to kill it but break it. Same with how he treats it, with respect but follows the animal’s rules.
