Looked it up: the British naturalist was Philip Henry Gosse, and the "sad" bird was actually the Jamaican Pewee.

There's actually a story on this one... it was based on the "sad" call it supposedly made, but it was discovered later that the namer had identified the wrong bird with the call. That's sad.
