Second, the recovery was a mainly a success thanks to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, state wildlife agencies, and conservation-focused non-profits working together. So visiting and speaking up for natural areas like the Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge (where this photo was taken) helps!

Great question! The biggest threat the squirrels faced was habitat loss/destruction, such as building of housing developments and roads (where they also got killed by cars) where they lived. Many endangered species are impacted by habitat loss/degradation, so conserving/managing wild lands is key!
