A non-inclusive and opinionated take on the Oregon Legislature's 2025 long session.
If you look at the direct link to the bill's page, you see that there are a lot of tabs. The overview, the text, analysis, amendments, register to testify, and testimony. YOU, yes YOU, can testify on any bill!!!! (Subject to time restrictions.) Link: olis.oregonlegislature.gov/liz/2025R1/M...

The bills are nested. Remember that SB stands for Senate Bill and HB stands for House Bill. There's also LC, which stands for Legislative Concept, but those are usually only available at the very very beginning of the session. So SB 0-99 is the first 99 Senate Bills-- SB 1, SB 2, and so on.

Now on OLIS, you can find this in two places: under the committee listing (below), or by the bill number if you know it. To find a bill, click on Bills and a menu pops up. Use the blue arrows to look at the drop-down:

Let's look at SB 916, which got passed today. Here's OPB's take: www.opb.org/article/2025...

The I-5 Committee has nothing going on so it's a bad example. But if we look at the Senate Labor and Business Committee, and click on Assigned Measures at the top towards the right, there's a long list. Hover over the blue SB123 number and a blurb pops up telling you what it does.

Step 1 continued: The House committees and the Joint Committees have their own lists. Look through the lists and see what titles relate to your interests. For example: if I lived in North Portland I might follow the Joint I-5 Bridge committee.

Step 1: what issues are you concerned about? Environment? Schools? Healthcare? Land use? Homelessness? Human rights? Immigration? There's a committee for that. Go to the OLIS link and click on the "committees" button in the upper right corner. Click on Senate and you'll see a list of committees.

Introduction: I watch and read a lot of the Oregon legislature's bills, committees, and discussions. I'm a private citizen. I want everyone in the state who is interested to weigh in and engage with their state reps and I want to guide people in how to do that no matter their beliefs.
