We conclude that 'normal' age-related changes across the lifespan (i.e. decreases in visual function) alone are not enough to induce complex hallucinations, & therefore hallucinations in older adults may signal underlying pathology rather than being part of the normative ageing process

Older adults reported fewer complex hallucinations both in real time and retrospectively, w/ none of our measured sensory or cognitive factors mediating this effect

We measured the tendency to experience simple/complex hallucinations alongside measures which vary across the lifespan & are thought to be risk factors for hallucination proneness (visual function, perceptual reorganisation, imagery vividness, inhibitory control, suggestibility)
