In my piercing experience, that does sound like it might be an allergy problem, even if it's not infected
If you're thinking about new studs, I'd suggest titanium or the clear plastic ones- the chances of being allergic to clear plastic/titanium posts is very low

If stainless steel causes a lot of trouble with healing, I'd suggest trying titanium studs!
If you get the same result, you might just have mad ears
