Lamarque has been one of my easiest to start from cuttings. Photo taken this morning by our great friend Nido.

Such beautiful creatures. We also have snakes that use our cellar as a hibernaculum. Black Rat snakes, now a threatened species in Vermont. We are very wildlife friendly folks. :) Here is a young one that I found in the house.

I have a whole new batch germinating right now that I need to pot up separately and give away. Pardon the weeds.

#5 Due to potential herbivore from rabbits and voles I placed wire around the seedlings to protect them.

#4 I grew some excellent, nicely rooted seedlings. I put the seedlings in bundles of 10 and over wintered them on the north side of our house where they be protected from the winter sun.

Photo from 2022, see how the brush has advanced. I planted the paw paw on the north side of some trees for what I have been told was needed for young trees.

There is a little different tastes between the cultivars. The yellow is pretty, smallest of them all, sweet but lacks the zig of the red cultivars. Not worth planting. Some have more of a plum like flavor. Mine fruit at different times so I have had a harder time comparing when ripe.

When properly ripe Cornus mas fruit is very good. I now have 9 named cultivars.

Here are some basswood seeds that I collect and then grew out after their double dormancy. I got over 80 seedlings. Such a great tree for many reasons especially for the nectar the flowers produce.

When removing woody invasives I make piles, never to burn. Woodcock nest near some of my piles, fawn hidden by the mothers. In the winter the snow shows the tracks of animals using the them for shelter.

This is an American Beech that I have watched die and finally to fall down. What a great tree for wildlife habitat now slowly return to the earth and enriching the soil.
I planted a chestnut next to it to benefit from all the nutrients and organic matter.
