A new state law effective Jan. 1 will give Oregonians extra protection to look out for each other amid aggression by the federal government. Senate Bill 1191 says people can inform others of their constitutional and civil rights without being guilty of interfering with law enforcement.

Deferred maintenance is a public safety issue. We already see the effects of underfunded infrastructure: crumbling pavement, delayed plowing, and canceled bus routes. The transportation funding proposal we’re taking up in a special session starting Aug. 29 handles the problems before they get worse.
