The #geminid #meteor shower reaches maximum this weekend and we were lucky to enjoy clear cloudless sky along the #OregonCoast. As expected, we saw more satellites than meteors, but it was totally worth driving to a rest stop north of Neskowin to get away from the light pollution.
The sky is dark and filled with stars. A large pine tree shadows the bottom right corner of the image.

Danae is seen kneeling in the sand and muck of Siletz Bay at low tide, pulling handfuls from a hole approximately one foot in diameter. Barbara is standing nearby looking down. A ten gallon bucket and shovel are lying on the bay between them and the Four Brothers haystack rocks are seen in the distance with shrubs and two have conifers growing on top of them. Highway 101 is seen at the edge of the bay at the base of a hill covered in trees. Purple varnish clams are seen in a colander with one small soft shell clam and a nearly spherical rock. The exterior of the purple varnish clams have stratified shades of black, gray, brown and yellow with white areas that have been stripped of the outer periostracum layer. The soft shell clam is cream colored with a black foot poking out the side. Cloves of garlic are seen in a ceramic bowl, a large spoon is stirring butter and herbs in a sauté pan on a cooktop. A yellow stock pot and sauté pan lid are seen on the countertop in the background. A colorful paper bowl filled with purple varnish clams are open revealing the purple blue and white interior with light yellow meat.

Facing north from the mouth of the Siletz River, the camera rests on top of a large log at the crest of the beach. Spanish Head hotel is seen in the distance, with several stories of rooms overlooking the ocean. Various sized houses line the ridge with conifers between. The seas are angry with white caps as far as the eye can see. Facing south from a ridge high above the north shore overlooking the mouth of the Siletz River, two small fishing boats are headed west toward the sea. The sky us filled with gray clouds the seas are dark greenish gray. The Salishan spit is seen on the south side of the river and the bay is seen near the top right. Large conifers fill the right quarter of the image and the bottom third of the image. Tiny barnacles cover remnants of three large preserved ancient sitka spruce trunks jutting out from below the sand. The trunk in the foreground is approximately three feet in diameter and has one large and several small abscesses mostly filled with water. It’s surrounded by a concave concentric circle that appears to have been formed by the waves that receded with the tide. Cascade Head rises from the sea in the distance covered by wind swept conifers. Large Sitka spruce trees grow down to the vegetation line east of the sandy beach. Low tide reveals preserved ancient sitka spruce trunks poking up from below the sand across the beach. The base of the mountain rises from the sea in the background covered with wind swept conifers. A large rock shaped like a sharp shark tooth juts up from the surf just beyond the sandy beach. The beach has ripple patterns in the wet sand alluvium and endless channels of water receding at low tide. Fog hangs low in the distance and conifers can be seen above the beyond the beach. Proposal Rock is a basalt sea stack covered in shrubs and vegetation with tall pine trees on the east side. At low tide, most of the base is exposed revealing the lack of vegetation due to erosion by the waves. Danae and Barbara are walking east away from the sea near the base of the sea stack.
