The other thing was lack of cellphones so I told my wife not to go anywhere. After a week she was so stressed she went shopping by herself and left me with the baby - post traumatic stress!

We had a computer monitor fall over and some cracks in the wall - but what was so shocking was the freeway collapse and apartment building.

I was in LA during the Northridge quake, grabbed my wife and young baby, dived under the table and spent the night watcing the tv for news. First disaster I remember. Not the last.

I am currently in Tokyo consulting with the local coordinators. Hope to start training in Maui early next month.

I will. Finishing up my PhD this year and hope to extend OpSAFE coverage globally after that.
