And here's what the device looked like.

In the video you can see them open the device up, pull out the electronics, and remove the battery which renders the ELT inert.

You can tell this device was designed for marine applications.

When the home in they do it with a simple handled/ham radio and they remove the antenna to make it sensitive over very short range.

XKCD with another comic relevant to my interests.

One of the things CASARA (Canada's AIR SAR unit) is track down spurious EPIRB/PLB signals. A friend of mine once tracked one to the dump in Sechelt, British Columbia.

Sometimes badly wired electronics can send a false alarm.

As someone who worked in a facility with a beam dump, this just makes sense.

We should apply more high energy physics solutions to human-scale problems.

Current pet peeve is that the map Facebook uses in Marketplace has a big fucking error in it, and I have no idea how to correct it.

This is Squamish. Tantalus Provincial Park is not in that location, it's several KM to the east.

I think the schoolchildren of Squamish in 1913 made a good choice for the town's name - of course renaming it from the first nation's name in the first place was a mistake.
