Fun with polarizers and baking soda. Grains of sodium bicarb are birefringent, so the crystal disappear and reappear as the angle between the optic axis and plane of incidence changes

I can't even express how wonderful of a new years trip I just had with the friends out on cape hatteras. A week of jamming, star gazing, beach walking, observing nature, cooking, laughing and staying up late. I am reinvigorated and filled with thanks for my wonderful friends

Strange bubble results. 100x magnification, cross polarized white light + 405nm laser. The thin crystals precipitated out of common food coloring, and the soap bubbles are clinging to the polarizing filter above them #microscopy
