For over 40 years, George Soros has been the leading private supporter of Europe’s Roma—its largest and most excluded ethnic minority. Through Open Society, he has championed Roma civil society, enabling Roma leaders to fight for equal opportunity and challenge deep-rooted discrimination.
In Latin America and the Caribbean, the deadliest region for environmental defenders, the Escazú Agreement protects defenders on the frontlines of the climate crisis. Escazú is the first international agreement to contain specific points on the protection of environmental human rights defenders.

We owe our fundamental freedoms to human rights defenders.

I recently spoke @ucberkeleylaw.bsky.social about the important work of protecting them, and standing by them as they don’t just defend rights but also advance them.

Climate action must be anchored in dignity and harmony with nature, drawing from Indigenous ideas that emphasize collective care for people and planet.

At COP30, Open Society announced support for Latin America’s environmental defenders and a greener, fairer economy where rights are protected.

Next week I am headed to #COP30, where @open-society.bsky.social will continue conversations from UNGA and NY Climate Week. Ten years since the historic Paris Climate Agreement, the world is on track to exceed the 1.5°C limit. Just when multilateral cooperation is needed most, it is fraying.

Social movements around Africa, often led by young people, have been calling for democracies that empower ordinary citizens, deliver political stability, and support economic well-being.

We asked people to define what democracy with dignity means for them⬇️

Investments in harm reduction programs, like naloxone distribution, syringe services, opioid use disorder medications, and housing-first programs, have driven down overdose deaths in the U.S. in recent years. Yet, we risk losing this progress because of politics.

World leaders came together in NY for UNGA80 at a pivotal moment of waning global commitment to multilateralism.

It is time to rethink the multilateral system—and reimagine one that adequately protects civilians, upholds human rights, and is grounded in justice, equity, and accountability.
