Letter to editor Lifeline crisis Lifeline, a crisis centre staffed in large part by trained volunteers, has been helping distressed people for 60 years. Due to a funding crisis they will no longer be able to reply to calls during the night, which is probably the very time they are most needed. The amount of money they need is $2 million. This Government has found three times that amount to encourage Michelin to come to this country. Fine dining matters, New Zealanders in crisis do not. This is at a time when mental health is one of our most serious problems. We rate 36th out of 36 comparative countries for mental wellbeing. Susan Grimsdell, Auckland Central.

We have removed requirements for curriculums toreflect local tikanga māori, matauranga māori, and te ao māori. Teachers need to stop politicizing strikes and go back to being underpaid and overworked! We've removed te reo from kids books. They're tough enough for me to read as is! Serving kids fresh food from local providers is woke! I don't know how teacher only days work, and I refuse to learn! Kids are being dragged out of math kicking and screaming and forced to learn māori!!! Teachers are incorporating te reo into math! That's one step tahi, rua, too far. We need to prosecute parents for truancy! I'm serving kids food that's eiter moldy or will burn them. To the Editor: I am one of these so-called profoundly autistic people this article describes. I cannot utter meaningful speech, and as a result, I was branded for years as someone with an intellectual disability and an I.Q. of 40. All this time, however, I understood everything that was going on around me. I just could not show it to others because of my deranged relationship with my own body. I am concerned about the creation of a separate category, called profound autism, for those of us with the most severe disabilities. There are real differences between the sort of autism that I have and so-called Asperger's syndrome. But it does not help us at all to impose a hierarchy of lower and higher functioning. We need to figure out how to tap into the skills and insights of those of us who cannot talk, who make up anywhere from 25 percent to 40 percent of the autistic community, depending on the estimate. For me, the way out of this dilemma was learning to communicate by typing. I suddenly went from being seen as intellectually impaired to taking college classes. I was never low-functioning, and neither are my autistic brothers and sisters without the ability to speak. I was just misjudged and ignored, and I fear that my fate will be the fate of many others termed low functioning in this new schema. Jason Jacoby Lee, New York
