You don't bother transporting victims to a specific place of slaughter unless there are truly huge numbers involved combined with a formidable organisational structure.

Not only was Herxheim a site for ritualised mass-murder, but for the sake of the spectacle they had feasts and pottery manufacturing; with all the infrastructure that this implies.

It lasted for weeks! Think of how much effort it took to transport the captives! The dedication to keep it up!
