I am certainly sympathetic to a tragic death. But there is additional guidance in law 4, section 5 as well.

Read about the 4 D's of DOGSO. Both of these calls were absolutely correct.
The 4 D's are how they teach referees (like myself) to evaluate if a foul is SPA or DOGSO.
Without the foul by Chambost, Cheberko could still defend, so it fails "for Number of Defenders."
