Alexandria was my favorite Egyptian city. I walked the whole way from the ancient Mamluk castle to the spot where the lighthouse once stood. And I wandered the alleys too.

She gave me a hug, and said "American" in a voice full of awe. I think about that woman sometimes. What she and her country endured, and the freedom my country symbolized to her.
